Saint John's Day
The first half of 2024 of the “Ser Crianças em Alagados” program went very well. From Tuesday to Friday, we welcome a little more than 60 children aged 6 to 11 (in blue in the photos) as well as 30 young adolescents (from 12 to 15 in green).
Our first priority is to ensure healthy nutrition for children. To do this we offer them 2 balanced meals daily. The menus are developed by a nutritionist and created by our cooks.
We help children in their academic learning by offering them support according to their age and level. We thus set up working groups led by employees of our association or volunteers. It is a real joy to see the progress of certain children when they receive attention and patience!
We also offer outings and parties for children. We went to the zoo and prepared a show for the “Sao Joao” festival.
We offer more general training that raises children's awareness of the environment, food and health. For example, we were lucky enough to have a dentist who showed us the impact of good nutrition on our health as well as the importance of good dental hygiene.
We have just started the second semester on the same basis. The needs and expectations are great. We have no shortage of ideas to help the children of the Alagados favela and we are counting on your help to support us!

Computer lessons for teenagers!
By Yves Engelmann | Social project manager

Thanks to a partnership with Ford Brazil, teenagers have had access from September to December for 2 hours per week of computer courses, funding from Ford having made it possible to employ a teacher. What a great opportunity for them to discover almost essential tools these days to find a job. Every Friday we took then the teenagers at the pastoral center in the room computer science of the PROCAPAZ project (A course project professional of the João de Deus association) where João Paulo, the teacher was waiting for us there.
Word, Excel, Powerpoint were Chinese words for our young people on the first day. A semester later, they know how to write a document, make PowerPoint presentation slides or even make a calculation table on Excel! We were truly amazed by their capacity for learning and involvement. in these courses. As a reward, they each received a diploma at the end of the year.not in computers. What a joy to see their smiles on this occasion! For many of them, it is their first diploma, the first time that they receive a mark of their accomplished work. “I’m going to frame it above my bed,” Davi exclaims, “Oh no, my little brother is going to frame it for me.” "If I do the same, I'll put it away carefully" Julia retorts.
This project was a great success that we hope to be able to repeat!

Literacy

Within the different promotions, half of the children are in the learning phase of reading and basic mathematics. We use progressive teaching materials. The children are distributed on level tables (actual level, assessed at the start of the year), identified by colors.
At the “special red” table are those who are at a kindergarten level: holding a pencil, identifying colors, recognizing vowels, writing numbers.
There are 7 in the morning and 8 in the afternoon.
At the “red” table are those who learn to read syllables and form words, perform basic operations. There are 4 of them in the morning and 10 in the afternoon.
Apart from the large proportion that these children represent in the entire group, these tables require a constant presence to support learning. The children in these two groups are between 7 and 11 years old. Our wish is to teach them to read and count so that they are able to follow the lessons taught in class. The lack of volunteers sometimes forces us to provide less personalized support. We are therefore constantly looking for new recruits to help these children who above all thirst for attention and interest.
