Relections from Lauren Jinshil Oliver, who resides in California and heads the organization, CirclesWork.  She went to Nepal as part of the visiting Social Artistry training team.   

Dear Fellow Social Artists,

We can make a difference half-way across the world! Let me tell you a story of significant change we have already begun, and what is still needed.  We can support the amazing work being done in Nepal by local social artists.

 I had the great good fortune of visiting Nepal to help teach teach Social Artistry. The Nepali social artists already trained had projects going all over the country. With the support of Dr. Tatwa Timsina, each one had selected a different population to work with, and all set high goals. They offered Social Artistry on all 4 levels of the psyche, and had integrated it into the culture of Nepal in astounding and fascinating ways. What energy! What devotion they brought to their projects.

 Jan Sanders, Evelyn Philbrook and I had the opportunity to make a number of field visits. I will never forget the women’s agricultural collective. They returned from a march in the city to celebrate, and to call for more agricultural collectives. All were dressed in pink and green traditional clothing, billowing in the breeze like flags of pride, as they drove up in a large truck, packed tightly in the truck bed. Then we all met for a couple hours, getting reports on the crops planted and harvested, the building projects (a large storage area, in which we met), the new plans to extend sales, and the challenges ahead.

 After Jan gave a presentation on Social Artistry, all the women were challenged to consider a gigantic new step: selling their harvested crop through the collective. This flew in the face of strong tradition: the women plant, tend, and harvest; but their husbands sell the crops, and bring home whatever monies they are inclined to. First one woman stood and took the challenge. She would confront her husband and sell the crop through the collective. Slowly a second woman came forth. Then a third. Finally five women stood – bravely and determinedly before the 60+ collective members, and declared their willingness to change this cultural pattern: bringing money to support the future of the collective, and bringing more money home. They could then assure the healthy diet and educational resources for their children by holding the purse strings.

These women cannot make such changes on their own. They need to support one another, and they need our support. They got one of the grants given by Social Artistry. Can we promise them another grant to help them take the next brave step?

This is a report of one of the trainings that was conducted when Janet Sanders and Christ Harrington traveled to Nepal to do advanced training with the Nepali training team, to provide them with additional community building and leadership skills.


Realizing the needs of leadership development for its mentors, block heads, management team and teachers, DAV Sushil Kedia Vishwa Bharati Higher Secondary School, Jawalakhel organized a two-day Social Artistry leadership training on May 23 & 24, 2014. The key trainer for the training was Ms Janet Sanders and co-facilitated by Kris Harrington, Amba Datta Bhatta, Pramila KC and Ishu Subba. The medium of the training was English. Objective of training with Social Artistry is the art of enhancing human capacities in the light of social complexity. It seeks to bring new ways of thinking, being and doing to social challenges in the world. The training purpose is to use multiple styles of thinking and expand the contemporary leadership challenges to manage complex social and organizational issues.

Specific Objectives:

a) To develop a wide range of innate, but previously undiscovered human capacities.

b) To create innovative solutions to critical issues confronting their communities and societies

c) To formulate models of change that can be utilized in a broad range of circumstances.

Expected Outcome

a) All participants will have a good understanding of the Social Artistry approach.

b) Participants will have increased their ability to work cooperatively with others and raised their level of self-esteem.


The training was based on adult learning principles. In order to ensure an active learning atmosphere; interactive participatory methods were used to conduct sessions.  Information and related messages were delivered through presentation and experience sharing. To develop common understanding on important issues were also emphasized. Small groups work methods were used to enhance the understanding of participants on specific issues and subject matters. Participants actively engaged in open discussion and experience sharing.

Overall Conclusion: 

The training was a great success. Participants realized the enormous power of potentialities they have within themselves. The needs had been well identified and addressed thoroughly. It is not just due to the facilitator’s skills and inputs, but the enormous amount of enthusiasm and experiences all the participants showed and shared among the groups. It must be noted that in every session, facilitator encouraged participants to engage in group exercises and create a workable vision for the association. It is recommended to do an annual refresher training to continue the progress.

Social Artistry Leadership Training for members of Rotaract Club of Manohara and Leo Club of Kathmandu Fulbari

ICA Nepal facilitated the social artistry leadership training jointly organized by Rotaract Club of Manohara and Leo Club of Kathmandu Fulbari. Mr. Amba Dutta Bhatta facilitated the training. The major aim of the training was to provide knowledge about different dimensions of leadership. The participants and organizers were very satisfied and happy with the sessions conducted, and the tools that were learned. 

Social Artistry Orientation to Research Students of PhD Centers

An orientation session for research students was conducted to provide the basic concepts of Social Artistry. It was shared how social artists help others to realize their innate personal qualities and understand the responsibility of personal and social transformation. Ms. Pramila KC, a member of the leadership team facilitated the session.

 Social Artistry Orientation to Interact Club of Glen Buds School

Orientation Sessions with members of Interact Club of Glen Buds School have been conducted. Dilli Upadhaya, President for Rotaract Club of Rudramati Babarmahal is supporting Ms. Pramila KC to mobilize the students to establish a Junior Social Artist Club/Community in the coming days.


Interactions and meetings are being held with school teachers, rotaract members, and the ICA/SA team to to develop young social artists who will utilize their inner potentials to bring a positive change in the school and the community. They will learn about the skills to identify our hidden talents and reaching a new level of leadership. The youths will be provided an introduction to social artistry.  Its basic tools, methods and concept will be shared in order to explore the inner capacity inherent in them. Youths will be so mobilized that they will be involved in micro-level projects and assignments. A group of students will work as social artists and perform various tasks and carry out activities within a school, or a local community that woill explore the leadership quality and inner capacity of the group, of school and the local community as a whole.

Certain funds has been allocated for the projects designed by the students. Ms. Pramila KC in coordination with the ICA/SA team will work with students to implement the projects.

Social Artistry Leadership Training to Social Mobilizers of ILRA Project Working in Far Western Region:

Here, we introduced Social Artistry tools as one of the major tools of social mobilization process. The training was facilitated by Atma Ram Timsina and RC Lamichhane.

 Micro Grants of Progressive Women’s Group:

Women of the Changu area are being united through SA training to transform their own area. They are involved in various activities and with the micro grant support of the Jean Houston Foundation, they are motivating local girls particularly of menstruating age to use hygienic practices such as using sanitary pads. Since the sanitary pads are expensive and the girls cannot afford them, the women are producing low cost sanitary pads and providing to the girls for a nominal cost. Mrs. Dewaka Shrestha, who has been trained in SA is coordinating this task.

This report is an accounting of the initial SA training that helped build the relationship between Nepal Cloth Merchant and Tailoring Association (NCMTA) and ICA Nepal.  There were 71 NCMTA members who participated in the training at the Shiva Village Commuinty Hall, Kawasaoti, Nawalparasi district, Nepal.

•This report highlights in brief the overall activities conducted during the Social Artistry Training conducted in Nawal Parasi district through the support of ICA Nepal. 
•The project is built around the partnership between NCMTA Nepal and ICA Nepal with an aim to deliver overall leadership quality to the members of the NCMTA
•The reports highlights the way forward and recommendations regarding the partnership between NCMTA and ICA and its impact on the beneficiary group.
Purpose and Role of NCMT:
•Nepal Cloth Merchant and Tailoring Association (NCMTA) is a registered non government commodity association established in 1995.
•NCMTA aims to organize all the cloth and tailoring entrepreneurs throughout the nation  with in an umbrella organization.
•NCMTA aims to develop the overall social, economical  and psychological aspects of cloth and tailoring  entrepreneurs .
•NCMTA  specifically is focusing on the overall  development of tailoring professionals( traditionally associated with tailoring profession) socially and economically marginalized as secluded caste in the society.
•NCMTA to accomplish its objectives of empowering cloth and tailoring entrepreneurs organizes business skills, vocational skills, leadership skills and social and interpersonal skills through the support of various non government, government ,charitable and professional organizations.
•NCMTA  has 40 district committees and aims to expand through out the 75 district of Nepal.
Some Objectives for the Training:
•Enable trainees to realize their innate personal qualities
•Develop self esteem subject to achieving personal and organizational goals
•Enable trainees to understand the complex social structures based on diverse social, cultural, geographic and traditional values
•Enhance the ability to identify themselves in such a complex group and enable them to understand their responsibility for personal and social transformation.
Results of the Training:
•The SA training program overall enabled the trainees to be aware of their role in the community and in an organization regarding the capacity they already possess within themselves.
• Trainees realized the diversity of social thoughts and thoughts of the generation and groups they live in and could determine to act accordingly for the harmonious decisionmaking within the group
•Trainees were spellbound throughout the 2-day program due to the training that focused into their inner consciousness, the strength of the sensory organs and its proper utilization for decisionmaking, leadership and moving forward in every aspect of life.
Planning to Move Forward:
•Accomplishment of this program is just the beginning for NCMTA and ICA partnership since NCMTA has incalculably realized the positive impact of the SA program for its members for them to grow psychologically, socially and economically.
•NCMTA and ICA shall focus on the delivery of at least a 3-day SA program to each of its 40 districts of the Nation.
•The SA Training for Trainers (TOT) shall be organized for the active executive central members and to the district level executive members of the NCMTA. This shall expand the delivery of SA more effectively and cost effectively. 
•A well planned one-year SA program delivery schedule shall be prepared for effective moving forward in rendering the SA leadership training to NCMTA members.

Tatwa Timsina was recently in the United States and met with social artists in Chicago.  Consultant, researcher, teacher, and Social Artistry facilitator, Tatwa Timsina is the executive director of the Institute of Cultural Affairs in Kathmandu, Nepal.  In working with community development in Nepal, Tatwa guides Social Artistry leadership training, program design, project management and strategic planning.  He brings volunteers, programs and financial support from international agencies together with community projects such micro-loans, sustainable agriculture, health awareness, gender issues, youth education and others.

Tatwa reported on the youth leadership training conducted in Nepal earlier this year and its success.

1. Introduction:

Institute of Cultural Affairs organized a day long introductory Training Program on Social Artistry Leadership. All together 24 Youths attended the program representing the different Rotaract Clubs from the zone 5 group of Nepal. All the participants were students from the different backgrounds of studies. Since all the participants were Rotaractors all of them have the deep interest of Social Work so that the title itself attracted them to participate in the training.

 Mr. Amba Dutta Bhatta took the lead role of the training and Mr. Deepak Adhikari supported him as the co-facilitator.

 2. Rational Objective of the Training:

To help our participants learn about the skills to indentify their hidden talents and acquire a new level of motivation through active imagination.

3. Experiential Objective of the Training:

Participants will get the opportunity to practice the tools, to activate their imagination capabilities through the exercises on Sensory physical, Psychological historical, Mythic Symbolic and Unitive integral levels.  This will give the participants an initial experience of the basic Social Artistry approach.  

Tatwa was the third social artist this year to visit the United States from Nepal.  In February Anita Shrestra and Akim Shrestra participated in the Creative Community Building Conference and Social Artistry Trainer's Training held in Colqluitt, Georgia.  All three are members of the Social Artistry Leadership Program team in Nepal.
