Training Young Peace Ambassadors Youths in Kumba (#70627)

1. Overview
The project Training Young Peace Ambassadors Youths in Kumba (#70627) was launched to empower vulnerable and conflict-affected youths in Kumba with practical peacebuilding skills, leadership capacity, and community engagement tools. Given the ongoing socio-political challenges in the South West Region of Cameroon, youth empowerment remains critical in fostering reconciliation, dialogue, and sustainable peace.
This initiative aligns with our mission at Community Echoe Responder (COMERES) to strengthen grassroots resilience through youth leadership development and civic engagement.
2. Project Objectives
The key objectives of the project include:
Training young people in conflict resolution and mediation skills
Promoting non-violent communication and community dialogue
Building leadership and civic responsibility among youths
Encouraging peer-to-peer peace advocacy in schools and communities
3. Activities Implemented
During this reporting period, the following activities were carried out:
a) Youth Selection and Mobilization
35 youths (18 female, 17 male) from different neighborhoods in Kumba were selected.
Priority was given to internally displaced youths and those from conflict-affected families.
b) Peacebuilding Training Workshops
Conducted a 3-day intensive training workshop.
Sessions covered:
Understanding conflict dynamics
Mediation and negotiation skills
Non-violent communication
Leadership and ethical responsibility
Community peace project design
c) Group Discussions and Role Plays
Participants engaged in practical simulations to resolve hypothetical community conflicts, helping them apply mediation techniques in real-life scenarios.
d) Community Engagement Plans
Each participant developed a small-scale peace initiative to implement within their local communities, including:
School-based peace clubs
Community dialogue sessions
Peer counseling groups
4. Results and Impact
The project has already begun to show measurable impact:
35 trained Youth Peace Ambassadors equipped with conflict resolution skills
Increased awareness of peaceful conflict management among participants
Formation of 3 youth-led peace groups
Reduction in youth-related verbal confrontations reported in two participating communities
Participants reported increased confidence in handling disputes constructively and serving as positive role models.
One participant shared:
“Before this training, I reacted with anger. Now I understand how to listen first and seek peaceful solutions.”
5. Challenges Faced
Security instability occasionally limited movement in certain neighborhoods.
Some youths faced transportation difficulties.
Limited financial resources restricted the number of participants we could accommodate.
Despite these challenges, the training was successfully completed with strong engagement and enthusiasm.
6. Lessons Learned
Youths are highly receptive to structured peace education when given safe learning spaces.
Practical role-play exercises significantly enhance understanding.
Community involvement increases sustainability of peace initiatives.
7. Financial Summary (Brief Overview)
Funds were used for:
Training materials and manuals
Venue and logistics
Refreshments
Facilitator stipends
Transportation support for vulnerable participants
All expenditures were made in accordance with transparency and accountability standards.

Follow-up mentorship sessions for trained Peace Ambassadors
Expansion of the program to additional neighborhoods in Kumba
Establishment of a Youth Peace Network
Monitoring and evaluation of community peace initiatives
