Vidya Poshak wanted to identify economically challenged meritorious high potential students from rural villages and setup a professional IIT-JEE coaching to make sure they all of them get the right guidance and professional training on JEE Concenpts so that all of them get into premier IIT colleges.
After identifying the right students from rural areas of different districts of karnataka who have great potential to make it big in their life the classes have started.
We faced the following issues which we have not anticipated
1. The students had challenges in understanding the concepts which were primarily in English as these students have studied till now in vernacular medium.
2. The student most of them have studied in rural schools and stayed with their parents and for higher education they had to stay in hostel so the students were missing their parents and getting homesick which affected their performance in studies.
3. Eventhough we handpicked the students who had the best of the potential still some students are not able to pick up the pace in which they were suppose to learn, this slowed down our training progress and for the students who are able to understand the concepts quickly started feeling missing our the pace.
Our Learnings and Corrective actions which were implemented
The major learning was that the students need personal care to build their confidence level and little bit of extra training care for the students from vernacular medium student to pick up pace in learning in English.
Another important learning was that every student has their own learning capacity and we need to understand their strengths and shortcomings and work accordingly.
The improvement we have done during this year were
1. Initially there was a Team building session and Life skills sessions were planned before the start of the training so that there is a good bonding between all the students and they don't have home sick.
2. The video lessons of the concepts for the initial chapters were made with a mix of Hindi and English to make sure all the students understand the concepts and language is not a barrier.
3. All the Concept videos were made available for the students in a computer lab so that the students at their own pace come and sit and watch the videos and understand the concepts. This made sure the slow starters have more time to understand the concepts.
4. Also the trining group has made into 3 categories and the 3 different levels of tests were introduced so that everyone according to their capability and capacity they learn in their own pace.
5. After every Major test a separate individual student wise diagnostic report were prepared and one to one discussion with students were conducted to understand their challenges and a study plan were prepared according to their comfort and following up to make sure they make good progress.
