Challenge

The main worry of parents with a child with disability is "What after me?". In India, access continues to be an issue. So adults with disability either get home bound with relatives, or locked up in institutions or get homeless. The concept of independent living with reasonable accommodation still lives in theories. To overcome the barriers and facilitate a safe and supported living space, a demonstrative model is required. The challenge is to create this in the community, run by disabled people

Solution

Activities Curriculum Development in the Indian Context. Empowering trainees in understanding and developing their strengths, learning skills in dealing with people and managing the group home and monitoring quality. Living Together Experiment- 3 times. Field visits within the country--2. Developing partnerships in UK, Korea or Thailand. Trainees to live in a group home for one month in one of these countries. Invite Resource persons from these countries. Invite Resource Persons from India

Long-Term Impact

A model with flexible and empowering support system for living and working Useful both inside the campus and in the city Ensure that our stake holders participate in community life Take away the worries of the parents Remove attitudinal barriers that make people perceive disability as a burden and a condition of incapacity Learnings, adaptations and accommodations develop are replicated in other parts of the country Learnings should impact education and rehabilitation goals in the future
