Project Report | Dec 20, 2023
Kaliyangile Zambia Final Report - December 2023

By Bridget Higginson | Executive Officer

Kaliyangile in 2023.
Kaliyangile in 2023.

Thank you for your support of the Kaliyangile vocational training centre. In recent years, thanks to your donations and some grants, Hands Around the World (HATW) has been able to support Kali in many ways.

We have trialled a new approach over the past 18 months, where we have worked with people in country who are able to visit the projects and have relevant skills to offer support. In Zambia, Catriona has been working with the Kaliyangile training centre and supporting Persis, the Director, as well as the board members. For example, through attending meetings at TEVETA (Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority) to assist the project in the complex process of becoming a registered certified training provider. Catriona has also supported the centre to comply with Zambian employment law and update contracts as well as the Kali constitution.

Some of our support has been in the form of capacity building and providing training opportunities for staff at the centre, for example, accounting training for the Director and the set-up of cloud-based accounting software for improved financial record-keeping.

We have also supported the development of the centre’s infrastructure. This includes the construction of a new workshop as well as a toilet and shower block. We are confident that the project currently has all the necessary infrastructure to satisfy TEVETA requirements and offer a range of courses to local people. As such, we think it’s time to stop the ongoing support to this centre as the local team are now able to drive the project forward without regular funding from HATW.

We are pleased to report that at the end of 2023, a tailoring course has commenced at the centre with eight students enrolled and two more due to sign up next year. Kali is in the process of making this an accredited course. Additionally, a computer course is underway with six students, and beekeeping training is also ongoing.

The Kali board have invited four new members to join the existing three and they now have a much broader range of skills and expertise. We hope the new board will drive the project forward and support the project to realise its potential and help many more young people in the community.

We are closing this GlobalGiving project for Kali and would like to thank you for your generous support for this project. We will stay in touch with our partners there and may offer financial support in the future for individual initiatives but no longer for ongoing running costs. We will fundraise for this as and when needed by applying for one-off grants.

We would like therefore to ask you to consider supporting another of our programmes, which provides lunches for children in Zambia and Rwanda - please follow the link for details.

From all the team at HATW, thank you so much for your support.
