In 2023, Hands Around the World initiated a new partnership in Zambia with Pamodzi Ndi Ana. Operating since 2006, PNA is dedicated to improving the lives of children in their communities and has successfully delivered numerous projects including education, vocational training, healthcare, and WASH initiatives. With our collaboration, PNA aims to promote equitable access to quality education and healthcare support for disadvantaged children and children with disabilities in Zambia.
The Eastern Province in Zambia is very isolated with very few facilities. People do not have access to basic services. Finding schools that are safe, with adequate facilities is difficult. There are very few health services, and many people have no access to safe water. These challenges are felt more acutely by vulnerable groups, such as children with disabilities. These children struggle to access appropriate health care services and assistive devices and face many barriers to accessing school.
With support from HATW, PNA implements a disability programme, providing wheelchair maintenance and assists these children to attend school. Staff adapt wheelchairs and hold regular workshops and training for parents. PNA supports the renovation of school buildings to improve the learning environment in these remote areas, especially for girls who face barriers to accessing education. PNA also adapts schools and provides learning materials to support the needs of children with disabilities.
The construction of a new classroom blocks, toilets and school materials will substantially reduce overcrowding, helping to improve academic attainment, student safety and improve school attendance, especially for girls. Providing children with disabilities with a specifically modified wheelchair is essential to the child's social integration. With the aid of a wheelchair, they will be able to go to school and participate in social events, enhancing their well-being and quality of life.
