Social research for community rainwater harvesting

By Victor Mendoza | Sustainability Leader

Dear Global Givers:

After two years of contact with plenty families which have participated in the workshops and cultural activities with San Pablo’s community, we have identified that even if some basic needs were covered after the earthquake of 2017, San Pablo’s population is still vulnerated on their clean water accessibility for dairy consumption and basic healthcare; in case of being affected by another natural disaster or climate change effect their inefficient water supply would be completely interrupted as happened last earthquake. The lack of drinking water in San Pablo Hidalgo economically and socially affects residents, resulting in migration, violence, few opportunities, viral diseases such as Zika, Dengue, Chikungunya; obesity problems and diabetes due to the high consumption of soda and poor sanitation conditions. Therefore, we will seek to impact twenty families that live between Otoño and J. M. Iglesias streets where they have even less water than the other residents.

Based on the 6th Goal of the UNDP and the inclusion of Article 4 of Mexican Constitution about the human right to access, disposal and sanitation of water for personal and domestic consumption; in the next months we will work with the community in order to harvest rainwater as an alternative to the municipal supply.

These last two months we have worked on the investigation of the determinants and conditions of the project so we will be able to: design and calculate the rainwater harvesting system, develop an ethnographic research design around water accesibility and consumption and establish the community linking methodology around the attention and documentation of the water problematic. The next months we will work on continuous training, workshops, assemblies, collective research activities, interviews and testimonies that will result in the construction of a demonstration rainwater harvesting system which will be located by the community according to the largest possible number of beneficiaries.
