Summary

Children with Spina Bifida have no sensitivity from the bottom down. Sensation and voluntary emptying of the intestine and bladder are not always possible causing urine to "back up" into the kidneys which can cause permanent damage over time to the kidneys or incontinence. Children may have frequent urinary tract infections and pressure sores. The goal of the project is to train nurses/physiotherapists, mothers and children with SB on Clean Intermittent Catheterization CIC and bowel management.

Challenge

For children with Spina Bifida, bowel and bladder continence is very important. If the bladder does not empty completely, it causes urine to "back up" into the kidneys causing permanent damages to the kidneys, urinary tract infections and pressure sore. The only solution for these problems is to apply Clean Intermittent Catheterization C.I.C. and bowel management. Nurses and physiotherapists in Chipata Zambia as well as mothers do not have the specific training in C.I.C. and bowel management.

Solution

To improve the lives of children with Spina Bifida the parents or caregivers need to learn how to conduct Clean Intermittent Catheterization C.I.C. and bowel management. The project will first train 14 nurses/physiotherapists from 7 hospitals on how to perform C.I.C. and bowel management, next mothers and children will be trained on how to conduct the procedures. The goal is all 20 mothers have the ability to perform the procedures and physiotherapists have the knowledge to train them.

Long-Term Impact

Children with Spina Bifida become self-sufficient in the management of incontinence helping them to integrate within their community, to attend school improving their education for a better future. Giving the mothers the knowledge on how to correctly perform the incontinency and bowel management procedures will help to better support their children Nurses and physiotherapists are given the knowledge to train the mothers and children with Spina bifida. This gives them invaluable knowledge.
