The project seeks to train children, young leaders and teachers from 6 schools of the 2 of the most violent districts in the city of Medellin, Colombia, to be responsible, participatory, creative, inclusive and peaceful citizens, and to have the abilities required to become agents of change in their communities. The process uses art and other cultural manifestations as the main training tools. It is about having fun and learning by doing.
The challenge is to promote education for coexistence and peace, in which cooperation, solidarity and respect are a must. The community has suffered repeatedly through patterns of violence for more than 30 years. Through this project children and young people, in the company of families and educational institutions, will learn to create innovative solutions to different types of violence. Given these circumstances the challenge is to educate for for peace using art as a transformational tool.
Integrating the education for peace workshops into the programs of the most representative schools of the affected districts and by training young leaders of grassroots organizations in the project area we are contributing to reduce violence and empowering children and youth to write a different story, a story of peace. The artistic products generated by the participants will be a tool to make the issue visible and share it with other communities that are experiencing similar situations.
The project is educating 4.000 children, young leaders and teachers from 6 schools allowing them to strengthen their skills as peace builders to be responsible people and to contribute to the construction of an inclusive and more peaceful society. The participants will be the protagonists of the transformation from a painful story to a peaceful and inclusive new start. This transformation is important and urgently needed to finalize with the vicious cycle of war.
