Our campaign to train 30 neurosurgeons by 2030 has raised $7431 on the GlobalGiving platform so far. We have received two disbursements from GlobalGiving to-date: $5838.66 and $531 in July and August respectively.
The funds raised will support our neurosurgery residents as they study to become fully registered and internationally recognized neurosurgeons. Our major partner, Duke Global Neurosurgery and Neurology (DGNN) has been supporting our neurosurgery residents financially in order to incentivize them to complete the program. NSU wants to progressively assume these costs as we move towards self sustainability.
Our major income generating source is our new neurosurgery unit at Mengo Hospital in Uganda. NSU physicians rotate through Mengo and charge a small professional fee to perform neurosurgical procedures and consultations. NSU obtains a percentage of the professional fees and uses this to run our activities. The $50,000 fundraising goal will give NSU a boost to support the training of its young residents while the income from Mengo Hospital becomes more regular and stable. We anticipate that this will take approximately two (2) years.
We are excited to inform you that we will adopt our first neurosurgery resident, Dr. Lydia Nanjula in October of this year. I have shared a lovely picture of Lydia in here for your benefit. NSU will cover Dr. Lydia’s academic and related non-academic expenses up to $500 per month as she continues her journey to become one of Uganda’s first and youngest female neurosurgeons.
This step would not have been possible without your generous support and we look forward to sharing more updates with you as we proceed toward our goal.
From all of us at NSU, thank you and many blessings to you,
