Young single mothers are the poorest of the poor in Cameroon because of low social status; incomes and absence of vocational training skills for job markets or self employment. This project enables them acquire modern livestock production skills to break out of the cycle of poverty, disease and social neglect. It also increases their incomes and protein intake for their families by providing them small livestock to start small farm businesses on completing from the training center.
All over the Cameroon, poverty and increasing modernization means that young girls are increasingly lured or forced into having early sex often leading to pregnancy and desperation. Alone and with a child in Bamenda she may be forced to turn to commercial sex for survival leading to AIDS infection and dies leaving behind an orphan who may become a social delinquent. Over 60% of those infected in Bamenda are women under 30 years of age. To avoid this situation it is better to empower them now!!
The candidates will be taught livestock breeds and breeding management as well as feed requirements for various ages, feeding from available feedstuffs and ago-industrial by products, while giving them the know how to use local materials for housing construction. They will learn how to ensure good health for their animals through proper hygiene and sanitation. To develop a business spirit, they will learn aspects of business management and marketing as well as processing to add value.
The project will train 150 young single mothers allowing them to escape from extreme poverty and raise their empowerment and self esteem. This will ensure that they are not only able to care for themselves but cater for the needs of their children and other dependents as many of them are heads of female headed families. The community will also benefit as money that would have been used for treatment of illnesses and rehabilitation of street children can be used for other development purposes.
