In recent days, flooding and landslides in Central Vietnam have left trail of destruction with complicated developments. Central Vietnam has been directly and indirectly affected by the historical Storm Linfa, Nangka and Saundel (Storm No. 6, 7 and 8 in 2020). Aid for social protection program Foundation Vietnam (AFV) has worked in co-operation with Vietnamese government and local partners to launch the "Together, we shall come back stronger. Take action for Central Vietnam" programme.
Flood water in Central Vietnam has submerged 179.900 houses. 132 people are reported dead and 27 people missing. More than 924 hectares of rice, 106.000 hectares of cash crops, 461.000 livestock and poultry have been swallowed under the water. The total damage caused by the flood is estimated to be around VND 1,126 billion. More than 300 local schools have been heavily damaged, forcing more than 10,000 students in Thua Thien Hue and Quang Tri provinces to stay out of school.
The entire amount donated by kind-hearted individual, corporate and organization donors will be utilized to support people in two provinces of Central Vietnam - Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue, so that (1) children can return to schools and continue their education, and (2) disadvantaged people can recover their livelihoods and resettle post-disaster. With every single VND 1 raised from the campaign, AFV will match-fund another VND 1 to share the suffering with our people in flooded areas.
Children are considered as the most vulnerable group affected by this historic flood. As the flood ended, their learning opportunities will be consequently lessened. We aim to help 1,000 disadvantaged children in Central Vietnam to continue their education and draw a brighter future for themselves. Furthermore, with our interventions, AFV plans to support 50 households on livelihoods recovery and safe shelter in response to the devastating impacts of these storms and floods.
