Dear All,
Starting in 2006, and developing as one of our most successful programs, hundreds of children enrolled in Tihueliske over the years and learned the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic. Some months ago we toyed with the idea of discontinuing our Tihueliske Education Program, as now there is a viable option for children - one primary school called Bilingue in the barrio of Santiago has free enrollment, some scholarships and gives students a uniform, while offering regular classes. In January 2024 we moved "our" children over to that school.
Insecurity. As some of you know, those involved drug trafficking invaded the village in early December 2023 and increased their presence dramatically, and since mid-January, the increase of violence and insecurity has caused all schools to close, both in Tlamacazapa and in Taxco, the municipal capital. We would have had no option but to do the same.
Changes are coming. Overall, after a solid 25-year run, we are taking a close look at what we can do given the circumstances. While tightening our working model, we are buckling down on training of trainers and the most promising and feasible activities, including remote learning and maybe, the option of "summer school." As we wait for better times ahead, this means being patient, low key, and deliberate in building collaborative alliances.
So, we reluctantly let go of Tihueliske, by no means an easy task or transition.
Wish us luck as we persist in making the impossible, possible.
Thank you over and over - your generosity made Tihueliske possible to begin with.
Sincerely,
The Atzin team
