This project will provide 2 days a week of music therapy in the home for children and young people with complex medical needs living in Northamptonshire, UK who are unable to attend school for prolonged periods. Our team of HCPC Registered Music Therapists will provide blocks of therapy for individuals with life limiting and/or degenerative conditions, chromosomal disorders, forms of cancer and needs associated with premature birth, working with vulnerable, often isolated 0 - 19 yr olds.
Children with complex medical needs and disabilities are often extremely limited in the support they can access. They are often unable to leave home for extended periods, are away from school or do not have a school place and many are immuno compromised. With no children's hospice in Northamptonshire, the individuals referred to our service often have to travel long distances to access specialist support and are very limited in opportunities for social interaction and psychological care.
Thomas's Fund was established in 2007 to work in the home, meeting individuals where they are relaxed and comfortable, offering consistent weekly support, at no cost to them, using music as a motivating and accessible medium through which to engage with highly qualified music therapists, forming valuable therapeutic relationships and working towards development in communication, social, cognitive and physical skills, and providing an outlet for emotional psychological self expression.
This project will support an estimated 50 children/young people, providing assessments and blocks of up to 10 weeks of therapy. The development of vital communication, social, cognitive and physical skills enables them to gain independence, to engage more in family life and in life within their communities as they are able. Better mental and physical wellbeing supports heightened quality of life and enables parents to work and provide for families.
