This project will give hope to a child with disability from the slums by providing the much needed therapies. A child who would otherwise be locked in doors due to lack of options will slowly move towards achieving their God given potential through access to occupational and speech therapy. Children with developmental disabilities require therapies as part of supporting them to overcome some or most of the challenges that come with the developmental disability.
There are currently more than 2 million children with disabilities in Kenya.3.7 percent of these are children with developmental disabilities according to the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) research of March 2018. Although there is some therapies offered to the children, according to the report, therapies and psychosocial support are the least service offered to these children due to high costs of therapy. Parents do not prioritise private therapies due to poverty levels.
LBF in partnership with qualified occupational and speech therapists provides therapies to children with developmental disabilities (Downsyndrome, autism). We also provide information, resources, instructions and practical support to parents to help continue offering support for activities of daily living to their children that will enable them achieve full potential.
The project will provide therapies to 50 children from the slums, kibera, kawangware, race course allowing them gain independent skills that will enable them to achieve their potential in life. Parents will get educated and informed on how to support their children in activities of daily living, this will enable them to be weaned from private therapies and still achieve their potential.
