In the 7750 government primary schools in North East Karnataka, there are over 59000 teachers teaching 1.9 million students. The Teacher Impact Project is a 3 year sustained teacher training programme, focusing on North East Karnataka. Your donations for The Teacher Impact Project this year will help us reach out to and train 20000 teachers and 2600 school heads in North East Karnataka, using synchronous cloud-based technologies, to make schooling meaningful and enjoyable for the children there!
60% of children in North East Karnataka cannot read Grade 1 text book or do simple division by the time they reach 7th Grade. According to Inside Primary Schools, by ASER, less than 20% of classrooms in rural India follow child friendly practices that make children feel valued in a way that they like coming to school regularly. Less than 10% teachers use teaching learning material other than textbook. For 61% teachers observed by ASER, teaching is reading out from the textbook.
Boredom, fear of failure and the undue importance given to rote learning are the major reasons why children do not learn! Only caring, enthusiastic and skilled teachers can help our children gain the confidence and the competence to learn! The Teacher Impact Project will support teachers and heads in Government Primary Schools in North East Karnataka to improve their skills in teaching so that they can make learning a meaningful experience!
North East Karnataka ranks the lowest in the Human Development Index of Karnataka. This is mostly attributed to lack of access to quality education in the region. Considering that most of the children in North East Karnataka go to Government Primary Schools, improving and sustaining the quality of the teachers who are in the system right now is the only way North East Karnataka can develop.
