Help Environmental Farming in Myanmar

During a January 2013 visit to the Southern Shan State, the President and founder of Global Community Service Foundation (GCSF) visited the stilt village of Naung Taw Lae Chay on Inle Lake to discuss the progress of the organic gardening project that GCSF implemented in the village in 2012.  We were informed that the project was a huge success.

GCSF started by sponsoring “start-up kits” for 25 families in the village.  The kits included: worms, containers, hosing and most importantly, training.  The villagers were delighted to tell their stories about expanding the project to include other members of their village.  As worm’s casting fertilizer became plentiful, the initial families that were included in the pilot project divided the worms and shared them with other families in the community.  After witnessing that the gardens were producing an abundance of sizable vegetables, other members of the community started using the fertilizer on their own gardens. Soon, there was extra fertilizer – the villagers formed a community co-op and began selling the surplus to families in other nearby villages – so now the worm fertilizer is a source of much needed extra income.

The villagers love the lake and are concerned about the amount of pollution in it.  One of the main issues has been the use of chemical fertilizer on the floating gardens, and the pollution that results to the water of the lake.  The villagers realized that by using the organic fertilizer they were able to grow healthier and more abundant crops, while simultaneously helping to save their precious lake.

GCSF wants to replicate the success of this project – but in order to do so – we need your help. 

A donation of $25 will not only make a difference in the lives of the people living in the villages of the lake - it will also improve the community’s environment.  Once we have reached our funding goal of $7,000 we will replicate the project in the next lake village.
