As we reflect on our journey over the past quarter, we are excited to share the significant strides made in the Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) project, “The Gorilla Guardians of Bwindi, Uganda #44078.” Since our last report in June 2025, we have witnessed continued momentum towards our fundraising goal of $50,000. At that time, we had raised $36,346.51 through 563 donations. Thanks to the continued support from our donors and partners like you, we are thrilled to report that we have been able to raise $37,007.36 this quarter, leaving us only 26% short of our target.

This Quarter’s Project Activities

1. Gorilla Health Monitoring

Our commitment to the health of the mountain gorillas remains unwavering. In collaboration with the Gorilla Guardians of Bwindi and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), we continued our routine health monitoring activities. This quarter, our dedicated teams collected 604 fecal samples from all 28 habituated mountain gorilla families across Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. These samples were analyzed at the Gorilla Health and Community Conservation Centre (GHCCC) laboratory, allowing us to screen for bacterial and protozoal infections. A portion of the samples was stored for future viral testing. This robust monitoring system ensures early detection and rapid response to any diseases that may threaten the well-being of these majestic animals.

2. Gorilla Guardians Refresher Training

To enhance effectiveness in our conservation efforts, we hosted refresher training sessions for our Human-Wildlife Observers (HUGOs). This year's training emphasized the importance of timely data collection to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts. Participants learned various data collection techniques, strategies for ensuring data quality, and ways to herd wildlife safely back into the park. The session enhanced our community's capacity, empowering local guardians by equipping them with the knowledge to report wildlife interactions effectively.

3. World Gorilla Day Celebrations

September 2025 was celebrated as World Gorilla Month, and CTPH actively participated in various World Gorilla Events under the theme “Mountain gorillas, our treasure”. Activities included community dialogues focused on conservation discussions, radio programs aimed at raising awareness, and educational outreach to local schools and community groups. We are looking forward to the national celebrations scheduled for October 25th in Rubuguri Town, where CTPH will play a pivotal role in promoting conservation awareness among young gorilla guardians (school children) through a conservation quiz.

4. Gorilla and Chimpanzee Census Update

On September 25th, we launched the second sweep of the 2025 Bwindi-Sarambwe Census. This comprehensive census aims to provide precise population estimates for mountain gorillas within the Bwindi-Sarambwe landscape, along with detailed observations of group composition and distribution. Regular monitoring is crucial for tracking population trends and informing our conservation strategies, ensuring that our efforts yield measurable impacts.

5. Gorilla Birth update

We have wonderful news to share regarding the mountain gorilla population! On September 11th, 2025, the Nyakagyezi gorilla family in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park welcomed a new baby born to adult female Tulambule. The new birth brought the Nyakagezi family an increase in size from nine to ten members. This joyous addition is a testament to the effectiveness of our conservation initiatives and the dedication of our team.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our donors and partners for your unwavering support. Your contributions are making a tangible difference in the lives of mountain gorillas and the communities that share their habitat.
