This project will build and rehabilitate water supply, toilets and hygiene facilities in 5 districts in Sierra Leone; providing the enabling environment for children especially the girl child to learn and thrive. Youth Partnership for Peace and Development will provide handwashing kits to 20 schools as well as facilitating training in life-skills to girls, build maintenance capacity of caretakers and School Management Committees, while at the same time providing dignity kits to 50,000 girls.
There are currently more than 416,000 children attending schools without access to basic water supply, toilet and hygiene services according to the Sierra Leone Ministry of Basic Education. Although govern is rolling out the Free Quality Education initiative, 21% of Sierra Leonean schools lack access to these basic services; with pupils to one toilet instead of 45 pupils to a toilet. This places huge disease burden on poor households and making it a significant and extremely urgent health alarm.
This project is closing the access gap to a descent toilet and water so more girls are able to stay in school and graduate to reach their fullest potentials. It will build water supply and toilet facilities and rehabilitate dysfunctional ones, provide handwashing kits to schools as well as facilitating training in life-skills for girls, build maintenance capacity of caretakers and School Management Committees, while at the same time providing dignity kits to girls. Together, we will be helping.
The long term impact of this intervention is that we will be creating safer and conducive learning spaces for children; making education thrive in poor and deprived settings and communities in some of Sierra Leone's hard-to-reach districts. The other long-term impact is that we will be supporting to keep the girl child in school while maintaining their dignity to a safe toilet/sanitation facility that is separate from boys. School enrolment will ultimately rise and performance will do too.
