What lies ahead for the HeadSTart Trust and the Elspeth Jack Music academy?
On entering the 3rd year of the pandemic we find ourselves hopeful that we will soon be returning to 'normal' schooling for the 2022 Academic year. The situation in South Africa has remained relatively stable with no harsh restrictions being imposed dispite the onset of the 4th wave that began in December 2021. As the school year for 2022 gets underway we are excited and renewed with positivity about the yea ahead. We are keen to get back into our programme and re-establish the music classes that have been so dearly missed by teachers and learners alike.
Forging New Relationships
During the latter part of 2021, our trust liaison, Mr van Zyl has been hard at work attending many meetings with local govenment and officials from the Western Cape Educational Deparment (WCED). In Novemeber, he was invited to attend a meeting by the WCED Deputy Director General for Education Planning, Mr Abrahams at De Rust Futura Academy in Grabouw. The school was started 64 years ago by the Cluver family, and they are looking at having just over 1200 students this year (2022). Mr Abrahams is very interested in what The HeadStart Trust have done, and is doing. The day was a lot about building relationships, which is sometimes hard work, and trust needs to be earned. We learnt a great deal about how to pitch a project with the local government, and Mr Abrahams has asked to meet again for more music focused discussions. He was keen to possibly assist with building music classrooms at schools in the Overberg to promote what we are doing.
In Decemeber we received some wonderful feedback from Mr Abrahams. We may now ask the Principals at the schools where HeadStart is involved or intends to be involved in the Overberg region, to submit applications to the Western Cape Education Department to construct music classrooms at their schools. He will then make sure that these applications will be reviewed and fast-tracked at Government level.
Further good news is that Mr Swart, the Executive Mayor of the Cape Agulhas municipality as been elected for a second term. He is already a fan of The HeadStart Trust; having worked with us during the food relief efforts; and expressed his desire to work closer with NGO’s during this current term. We look forward to working with these officials in the future.
Continued Relationships
In early Decemeber we received a donation of ten beautiful guitars, all newly strung and each with their own protective carrier case. The guitars were donated by Mr Mitchel, the Director of Music at Diocesan College (Bishops) in Cape Town. This is a significant collaborative relationship between Bishops and The HeadStart Trust. Mr Mitchel is well-known and respected in musical circles in the Cape, and particularly in schools. He is enthusiastic about developing our relationship, and is already looking out for percussion instruments and recorders for the Overberg region.
The HeadStart Trust was also able to support Mr Fowler (an Old Diocesan and percussionist), supplying drums for the music teaching program he runs in the southern Cape village of Stanford.
Future plans
The HeadStart Trust has been very fortunate to receive a donation from Grapes for Humanity . This will allow us to continue our established music programme in the two primary schools in Napier and Bredasdorp, in the Cape Agulhas Region. We will be able to support a qualified music teacher to teach group music lessons, at both schools, for 100 learners at each school, as well as develop and train a community member to assist with teaching music for a year. We hope to purchase 100 recorders, 25 guitars and 6 keyboards to be used at these two schools. In addtional we will also be able to provide Personal Protect Equipment for the year for the facilitators of the programme. We are most grateful to have been considered for this donation - Thank you.
We also hope to continue our negotiations for the purchase of a beautiful old building on the Main Road of Napier to accommodate the expanding music academy, which first began in an unused classroom of Napier's Primary school. Establishing a bigger academy will allow us to accommodate more school learners from surrounding areas, working with the community to create "possibility enablers" in these rural communities.
We will keep you posted on any developments in upcoming reports, for now we are looking forward to a promising 2022 and the miracles of possibility through music education.
