Our Director, Joseph Julian K G left for flood hit districts in Kerala the moment he got back from an overseas assignment. He has been working tirelessly with Benoy Peter and his team from Centre for Migration and Inclusive Development who are assisting all efforts on ground with the Local Panchayats. Together we are fighting to prevent a deadly cholera and typhoid outbreak. This is his entry:
“I visited Vadakekara Panchayath in Paravur Taluk in Ernakulam district along with Benoy Peter of CMID yesterday (21 August 2018). Every household (close to 9500) had been under water. This is the case close to 4 other Panchayats. Almost 29000 households are directly affected in this area.Most people are in camps wanting to come back home soon and starting to clean houses without any personal protection equipment (gloves, boots, mask, goggles etc) and are exposing themselves to hazardous waste. They urgently need support in getting these supplies to them. They are handling carcasses of animals with minimum or no protection. We can't afford a disastrous public health crisis after such a devastating deluge. People have lost everything and they need to stay healthy to rebuild their lives and community. Appealing to everyone to support in getting these supplies to them. We have spoken to the Panchayath Presidents and Secretary and they will ensure these supplies reaches people in every ward” - Julian Joseph
Since the day we launched, we have received USD 13255 Amount that has helped us reach 18000+ people. Thousands remain unreached, coming in contact with contagion as they wade through water and mud dotted with dead bodies of people and animals that the floods left behind. We are trying to stave off a very real public health nightmare of a deadly typhoid and cholera outbreak by reaching out to people who are clearing this with safety kits that will protect them.
