TECHO is channelling funds to build new homes for the thousands of families and communities affected by the eruption of the Volcano de Fuego. Firstly, temporary housing models will be built for families currently living in tents. Thereafter, TECHO will provide more than 800 definitive homes together with other NGOs and authorities in the field, focusing on the long-term approach of our emergency response.
"Volcano de Fuego" erupted in June 2018, in Guatemala. As it stands, the figures are: more than 150 deceased and 57 wounded; over 4 thousand people in emergency shelters; more than 12 thousand residents evacuated; 197 people missing; and 1.7 million people affected.
TECHO began its work together with the official Humanitarian Team coordinated by the United Nations. Our role has been that of gathering information from shelters in order to gain in-depth knowledge of the volcanoes impact. Today, TECHO is providing temporary housing modules for the affected families. It will also establish an action plan to relocate victims into over 800 definitive homes throughout a social, housing and urban approach and management.
Whilst providing temporary and long-term housing, community participation is a central axis of this project. It involves establishing instances of dialogue and consensus in each stage of the process, through working tables and participatory workshops, thus promoting the community's capacity to organize and analyze key issues. To this end we will carry out a citizen audit to guarantee the welfare of the families and to promote their permanent participation in the project.
