Technology Afterschool Clubs for Girls in Nigeria

W.TEC Academy April - July 2026 (3RD Term)

The W.TEC Academy programme continued its mission of empowering girls with digital and technological skills during the third term of the 2025/2026 academic session. The programme provided girls across Lagos, Kwara, and Ondo States with opportunities to develop technology skills, strengthen their confidence, and explore pathways into STEM education and careers.

Programme Objectives

Build digital literacy and confidence in girls.
Foster innovation, creativity, and problem-solving through technology.
Inspire and encourage interest in STEM-related careers.
Provide mentorship, exposure, and opportunities for personal development.

PROGRAMME IMPLEMENTATION AND REACH

During the third term, the programme was successfully implemented across three states, reaching a total of 490 girls.

Ondo: 135

Participants actively engaged in technology learning activities and demonstrated enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment throughout the programme. The girls continued to build valuable digital skills while improving teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities.

COURSES DELIVERED

Participants received hands-on training in a range of technology-focused learning activities designed to strengthen their digital competencies and prepare them for future opportunities in STEM.

The programme focused on:

Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking
Creativity and Innovation through Technology
STEM Awareness and Career Exploration

These training sessions encouraged participants to develop practical technology skills, build self-confidence, and explore innovative ways to use technology to address real-world challenges.

INTERNATIONAL GIRLS IN ICT DAY CELEBRATION

As part of efforts to inspire more girls to pursue careers in technology, W.TEC Academy celebrated International Girls in ICT Day in both Lagos and Kwara States.

The events provided an opportunity for girls to engage with technology professionals, learn about STEM career pathways, and participate in interactive activities designed to boost their interest in Information and Communication Technology.

Inspirational talks from women working in technology.
Interactive STEM and ICT activities.

Discussions on opportunities for girls in the digital economy.

The Lagos International Girls in ICT Day celebration was powered by Oracle, whose support contributed to the success of the event and provided girls with valuable exposure to technology career opportunities and industry insights.

PROGRAMME IMPACT

The third-term activities contributed significantly to:

Increasing girls' confidence in using technology.
Strengthening digital and problem-solving skills.
Encouraging greater participation in STEM-related fields.
Expanding awareness of career opportunities in ICT and technology.
Building a supportive community of young female technology learners across the three states.

Participants demonstrated increased enthusiasm for technology and greater awareness of how STEM skills can create educational and career opportunities.

CONCLUSION

The third term of the 2025/2026 W.TEC Academy programme recorded significant achievements across Lagos, Kwara, and Ondo States. Through technology training, mentorship opportunities, and the celebration of International Girls in ICT Day, the programme continued to empower girls with the skills, confidence, and inspiration needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

W.TEC remains committed to creating opportunities for girls to explore technology, develop essential future-ready skills, and become the next generation of female innovators, leaders, and technology creators.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS SUMMARY

490 girls reached across Lagos, Kwara, and Ondo States.
160 girls trained in Lagos.
195 girls trained in Kwara.
135 girls trained in Ondo.
International Girls in ICT Day celebrated in Lagos and Kwara.
175 girls participated in Girls in ICT Day events.
Lagos ICT Day event reached 125 girls and was powered by Oracle.
Kwara ICT Day event reached 50 girls.
Continued promotion of girls' participation in STEM and technology education.

The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC) is a Nigerian nonprofit organisation committed to building a more inclusive science and technology ecosystem, with the next generation of women STEM creators, entrepreneurs and leaders.

This is done through technology trainings, mentoring, work placement and research. W.TEC works in partnership with local and international NGOs, educational and research organizations.

W.TECwas set-up in January 2008 and conceived in response to research that showed that although ICTs significantly contribute to a nation’s development and growth, women – who make-up approximately half of Nigeria’s population – are severely lagging behind in their knowledge and use of technology.
