Our project aims at equipping 40 young mums (24 years and below) with technical skills to be able to sustain their lives and that of their kids. After the two month cohort, the trainees get basic skills in Tailoring; and they also get seed support to start their businesses. We offer SRHR & Financial literacy training to them as well. They join alumni network for continuous support and peer learning. During their training, their kids are kept at a safe day care with trained caregivers.
The challenge we address is the significant barriers faced by young mothers (under 24) in Kondele, Kisumu. These women, often victims of early pregnancies and sexual violence, drop out of school and lack financial and emotional support, leading to limited employment opportunities. They face societal stigma and lack childcare services, hindering skill development. This project benefits these young mothers by breaking the cycle of poverty and dependency, improving their and their children's future
This project will solve the problem by providing technical training in tailoring, SRHR education, and financial literacy to young mothers in Kisumu. Over two-month cohorts, participants gain marketable skills, receive seed support to start businesses, and join an alumni network for ongoing support. The project also offers safe daycare for their children during training, creating a supportive environment to share challenges and gain inspiration, breaking the cycle of poverty and dependency.
In the long-term, this project will empower 40 young mothers annually, enabling them to become self-sufficient and economically stable; each supporting their families, reducing poverty, increase education on SRHR, and improve financial literacy within the community. The alumni network ensures ongoing support, fostering a culture of entrepreneurship and resilience. Over time, this will uplift families, reduce dependency, and create a ripple effect, positively impacting hundreds in the community.
