In 2022, NairoBits Trust launched a fundraising campaign to support the digital skills training of 100 youth from Mombasa's informal settlements and link them to job opportunities. The campaign was motivated by our experience after we implemented a pilot project in partnership with British Council. The Skills for Inclusive Digital Participation saw us offer digital skills training to more than 1000 women, youth, and persons with disabilities from Mombasa's underserved communities. After this pilot, we realized that we had only scratched the surface and many more populations were left out, mostly the youth. The NairoBits model is anchored on partnerships, and the training was delivered in partnership with several organizations serving underserved populations. These organizations were instrumental in the successful role out and implementation of the first phase.
This year the NairoBits teams are back in Mombasa to finalize the SIDP training, under the partnership with British Council, but also to set up and continue providing the training even after the closeout of the initial program. We are confident that with your partnership and support, we will realize our goal of fully rolling out in Mombasa and reaching thousands of young people. Through this phase, we will train more than 400 young men and women, including those with disabilities.
We celebrate this milestone. However, we can reach a greater impact when we close some key challenges that currently hinder our training. Finding well-equipped centers has been near impossible, and those with computers/laptops are either dilapidated or have older versions that do not work well. This is why we need your support to ensure that young people have access to quality training through access to quality facilities and equipment. The opening up of the coastal region to new livelihood opportunities, such as the blue economy and online work, presents a myriad of opportunities for these young learners. Exposure to the ICT sector is a missing piece that could see these young people propelled to the next level of positive impact.
