As members of Leadership Initiatives' [LI] International Internship Program, high school students Katherine, Maya, Mia, and Aracely have been working with LI to research and learn about public health crises in Bauchi State, Nigeria. To transform lives, the team & LI are working to create a public health campaign to raise awareness and educate the people of Bauchi on these various public health issues.
Nigeria has multiple pressing public health issues, even amidst the global pandemic. Unfortunately, funding for training, hospital run programs, and education regarding these issues is strongly lacking in Bauchi State, Nigeria. Students will partner with the Ngari Maternity Ward & Medical Center in Bauchi throughout the school year to assist and support medical training, public health programs, and the production of educational resources for others in the community as well.
Leadership Initiatives students will have the opportunity to partner with doctors from the Ngari Maternity Ward & Medical Center to create a public health campaign for one of the major public health issues in Bauchi. Through their public health campaign, students will be able to connect the Bauchi community with pre-established public health programs and assist with funding to help these programs get off the ground.
By increasing access to education and information regarding public health issues, people in Bauchi will be at less risk for further health crises and can better work towards prevention methods. Additionally, the creation of health programs through their partnered hospital will allow more people in the community to have access to health care.
