As part of Leadership Initiatives' International Internship Program, Tselot, Zoey, Thandi, Kaliah, and Mika are partnering with communities in Bauchi, Nigeria to explore barriers to education. Working with local leaders, educators, and community members, they are researching challenges affecting school access, participation, and student success while developing advocacy strategies grounded in community priorities.
In many rural communities across Northern Nigeria, families struggle to meet their most basic needs. When children cannot access quality education, they are more likely to leave school to work, and girls who are no longer in school face an increased risk of early marriage. Limited economic opportunities, child labor, gender-based violence, and a lack of awareness of legal rights leave vulnerable children and families exposed to harm while making it even harder to break the cycle of poverty.
Tselot, Zoey, Thandi, Kaliah, and Mika are working alongside community leaders in Gudum Sayawa to expand educational opportunities. Donations help support classroom construction, school renovations, scholarships that help girls continue their education, vocational training opportunities, and community initiatives that strengthen access to learning and create pathways for students and families.
The work of Tselot, Zoey, Thandi, Kaliah, and Mika supports long-term educational opportunity in Gudum Sayawa. Investments in classrooms, school renovations, scholarships, vocational training, and community-led education initiatives can help more students access learning, remain engaged in school, and build pathways toward greater opportunity for themselves, their families, and their community.
