Improving Health Outcomes Through Health Education

By Jessica Bailly | Director of Development

Leadership Initiatives is currently working with the Dungal, Bayara South, and Buli communities to strengthen access to education through community-driven advocacy and locally informed infrastructure development. Since the start of this initiative, community engaged interns have worked closely with local leaders, families, and educators to build a grounded understanding of educational access in Northern Nigeria. Through ongoing mentorship and research, participants have examined how social, economic, and geographic factors influence school attendance, learning continuity, and long-term educational outcomes for children.

This advocacy model emphasizes that education is not only shaped by curriculum, but by the daily realities families face when deciding whether and how their children attend school. Interns have explored how household responsibilities, distance to schools, classroom overcrowding, and the availability of safe learning spaces shape participation in education. This hands-on approach allows interns to develop a deeper understanding of education systems while supporting communities in identifying practical, locally driven solutions.

To ensure advocacy efforts reflect lived experience, Leadership Initiatives designed and implemented a comprehensive baseline community survey across partner communities. Interns learned how to develop culturally appropriate survey questions, collect both quantitative data and narrative responses, and analyze patterns related to school access, cultural norms, and learning barriers. This process provided critical insight into family decision-making around education and the structural challenges that limit consistent schooling.

Findings across communities revealed that families place a high value on education and consistently express a desire for their children to attend school regularly. However, limited school infrastructure frequently prevents this goal from being realized. Many respondents cited overcrowded classrooms, insufficient learning materials, and long travel distances as key barriers. In some areas, children must walk long distances to attend school, discouraging attendance, especially for younger children and girls. Financial constraints, including uniform costs and learning supplies, further contribute to irregular attendance. These findings underscore that improving educational outcomes requires more than encouraging enrollment. Physical infrastructure, proximity, and safe learning environments play a critical role in whether education is accessible in practice.

Using these insights, Leadership Initiatives is advancing an advocacy strategy centered on expanding educational infrastructure in underserved communities. Advocacy materials and community discussions are being developed to highlight the link between school access, long term economic stability, and community development. These tools are designed to support conversations with community leaders, partners, and stakeholders about the need for additional classrooms, learning materials, and safe school facilities that reflect community priorities.

In the coming months, Leadership Initiatives will facilitate community advocacy workshops focused on education access and school development. These workshops will create space for families, educators, and local leaders to discuss challenges, share priorities, and collectively identify solutions. Interns will support these sessions by presenting survey findings, facilitating discussions, and helping communities articulate clear advocacy goals related to school construction and educational investment.

Beyond advocacy and education planning, Leadership Initiatives is expanding access to formal education by supporting the construction and development of schools in Northern Nigeria. New school buildings are being planned to reduce overcrowding, shorten travel distances, and provide safe, structured learning environments for children who currently lack consistent access to education. These schools are designed to serve as long term community assets, supporting literacy, numeracy, and future opportunity for children across the region. Insights gathered through the internship program directly inform school design priorities, ensuring infrastructure investments respond to real community needs.

Through community driven research, data informed advocacy, and long term investment in educational infrastructure, Leadership Initiatives is working to strengthen access to education in Northern Nigeria. The findings from the Dungal, Bayara South, and Buli communities continue to shape advocacy strategies and school development plans, ensuring that educational solutions remain rooted in the lived experiences of families. Leadership Initiatives remains committed to strengthening local capacity, expanding educational opportunity, and supporting brighter futures for children and communities across Northern Nigeria.

We are deeply grateful for your generosity, which makes this partnership and community-centered advocacy possible.

Thank you for your support,

Leadership Initiatives
