As members of Leadership Initiatives' [LI] International Internship Program, Anna, Helen, and Sophia from Barrington High School High School have been working with LI to help create & publicize human rights campaigns for various rights issues in Bauchi State, Nigeria. To transform lives, the team & LI are working to connect with local nonprofits in Bauchi to research, document, and advocate for various human rights issues within the area.
Human rights violations are very common in the developing world, but not many are aware they ever happen. Leadership Initiatives has worked with the Bauchi community for over fifteen years and continues to grow our relationship with other activist organizations that are local to the area. A lack of funding for research, campaigns, and basic training has left many of these organizations unable to assist victims of various rights abuses and work to create proper prevention programs.
Leadership Initiatives interns will work with local nonprofits in Bauchi to assist them in creating local campaigns to increase awareness of human rights abuses, sex trafficking, and child endangerment. In doing so, Leadership Initiatives and community leaders will identify ways community members can report and work to contain/stop these abuses.
We will create a community with the ability to identify and fight human rights abuses, that will remove the stigma of victims and instead create a vehicle for advocacy adding to the growth of Democracy within their country.
