Q4 report 2022 - Teaching Reading in Poor Communities in Jakarta
By Stuart Patience - On behalf of the Saya Suka Membaca team
Start of the program
Funding for this program is off to a slow start, but we're still excited about the potential for serving children in poor communities across Jakarta, and the need is huge.
According to government figures, the capital is home to more than 500,000 people living below Indonesia's poverty line of Rp. 22,500 (US$1.44 per person per day). The number living just above this line in the Jakarta Capital District and the Greater Jakarta area is several times this number - and educational opportunities are a key factor in their struggle to escape poverty.
Despite a lack of targeted donations, we have already begun a partnership with a local community development charity, Yayasan Bina Berdaya Bangsa (YBBB). YBBB has begun mentoring visits to support teachers in two kindergartens in their area of operations, as well as supporting teachers in a local community centre to serve around 20 children.
We look forward to seeing this project grow in 2023.
