Dear Supporters,
We’re happy to share another update on our work focusing on Jakarta’s urban poor!
Back to Our Roots
Did you know that Saya Suka Membaca started in the slums of Jakarta more than 14 years ago? While Jakarta remains close to our hearts, it has been challenging in recent years to find new partners focused on the urban poor. That’s why we’re grateful to share that over the past month—and into the first quarter of 2025—we’ve had the opportunity of training more than 10 teachers from various charities working in Jakarta’s slums. These dedicated teachers are helping bring the joy of reading to some of the city’s underprivileged communities.
Testing
A key part of our work is testing, as it allows us to measure the impact of our programs. Our approach often includes baseline and endline assessments, helping us track progress and identify children who may need extra support.
But this time was a bit different, as for the first time, we were invited by two schools in a densely populated area of Jakarta to conduct school-wide literacy testing for all their students. This is a significant step, as it goes beyond our usual program-focused testing. These schools wanted to better understand their students’ reading levels, and we’re grateful we can help them with that. Last week, we completed the testing, and in the coming weeks, we’ll analyze the data and provide detailed feedback to the schools. This will help teachers identify which students need additional attention and guidance.
Looking Ahead
As we approach December, we’re preparing for the new year. We’re working hard to find new funding—both locally and internationally—to continue training teachers and volunteers, to reach more communities in need. If you or someone you know would like to support this important work, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us!
Thank you, as always, for your support in our work here in Indonesia.
Salam Literasi,
