PROJECT REPORT - ELECTRONIC TEACHING AIDS FOR DISABLED CHILDREN

DUE DATE OF REPORT : NOV 04, 2017

One tool to help students with disabilities is assistive technology. Today, assistive technology can help students with certain disabilities learn more effectively. Ranging in sophistication from “low” technologies such as a graphic organizer worksheet to “high” technologies including cutting-edge software and smart phone apps, assistive technology is a growing and dynamic field. Several areas of assistive technology and sample products may be found in any given classroom, making a difference in how students of all abilities learn.

We at Balajothi tried this tool last year with the idea of getting special  children  interested in learning  with the help of electronic aids. GlobalGiving’s support through donations was a catalyst in making this happen.  As was reported earlier the experiment started with Rahul, one of the maximum disabled special children at Balajothi.  As he was non-verbal he was encouraged to use a tablet (a Samsung Galaxy Tab) and this step truly changed his life. Using this device he has been able to do things even normal children find difficult.  Thanks to the time he spends on the tablet, we can even see a difference in his hand-eye coordination.

We tried this approach with other disabled children as well using an electronic key board and again we were excited to see the results.   Each child took to using the key board readily and today the class hums with musical activity much to the joy of the parents and caregivers.

We really believe that electronic aids such as tablets, key boards and other assistive devices  have a critical role to play in the development of a special child. We are now exploring the use of such devices actively in teaching and vocational training. Thanks to your donation of $ 232.98 to date (and hopefully many others to follow), we hope to make it a reality soon.
