There are no public rehabilitation centers that can serve thousands of non-verbal children with autism in Kyrgyzstan. Therefore, children are left alone at home and become increasingly isolated, some prone to aggression and self-injurious behavior facing grim life at mental institutions. The best chance to improve the situation are motivated and properly trained parents who will teach their children basic self-service skills, provide speech therapy, following instructions and requests and etc.
We will train 24 parents basic principles of ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) that will help them teach their children acquire many different skills, such as language skills, self-help skills, and play skills; in addition these principles can help to decrease maladaptive behaviors such as aggression, self-stimulatory behaviors, and self-injury. This will in turn help children to obtain socially significant skills necessary to their successful adaptation into society and reaching full potential.
The project will help 24 children directly, their family members. However, our main goal is to prove to the state that properly trained, motivated parents can teach their children learning skills, that it is the most efficient way to change the fate of thousands of children with autism who are currently isolated from society, do not have access to education. In case of the successful implementation of the project, we will push the government to replicate this experience across the entire country
