Quarterly Report: Teach Translation to 20 Students in Post-ISIS Iraq
Published December 5th, 2019 for Global Giving
Thank you for your continued support of Ideas Beyond Borders! With your help, we've been able to grow our on-the-ground translators program significantly in the last three months.
KEY UPDATES
We successfully kick-started our partnership with the University of Mosul, hired a university coordinator to manage the program, and recruited 10 translators who actively participated in workshops and skills sharing events. They've translated 30 articles on medicine, politcal history, science, civil rights, pluralism, and more, and they've help recruit 10 more students for next semester.
Young adult translators have been vocal on how the program is an opportunity to rekindle a Golden Age of Enlightenment across the Middle East. Their communities were previously terrorized by ISIS and are still fighting sectarian violence. Some of their voices and stories were highlighted in a recent article by The Guardian, "Spread the Word: the Iraqis translating the internet into Arabic."
Momen Mohamad, a program translator, says that the on-the-ground project matters a lot to him and his community. "I want to do something good as a person from and show the world that we can achieve things. Going through a really tough time helped us understand the world better, and look to improve our knowledge," he explained.
ADDITIONAL PARTNERSHIPS & PROGRESS
Your support has made it possible for us to grow our reach in the region and empower even more university students across Iraq. We've launched partnerships with the University of Tikrit and students at the University of Kufa, which will triple our impact as programs launch this spring.
Together, we're sparking meaningful change in the Middle East through translation, education, and empowerment. None of our work would be possible without our community of friends, supporters, and partners.
In 2019, we have translated and distributed 12 books and over 5,000 articles on civil rights, critical thinking, science, and more. We've empowered over 120 young adult translators, and have seen our content downloaded thousands of times and viewed over 9 million times this year.
Thank you for making these accomplishments possible.
