Celebrating Earth Day

Learning Container Growing at Neema

April 22nd was Earth Day, we’re celebrating that our thriving permaculture farm provides nutrition for students, children, and staff, and has become a living classroom.

Every day, sustainable practices are restoring the land and strengthening our local community.

One of the main constraints in Neema’s region is that farmers typically only grow maize, a crop that allows for just one harvest per year, relying heavily on artificial fertilizers. This leaves families vulnerable to food insecurity.

Neema's 3-acre farm, however, uses techniques that reduce soil erosion, organic fertilizers, and natural pesticides to strengthen the soil and help crops thrive. Our students, children, and staff have a diverse and healthy diet. Students and their families also learn how to adapt to changing climate patterns, fight food insecurity, and build lasting resilience.

Rebecca and Elizabeth are students in their second year of the agribusiness program and recently passed their first national exam! Three other students, Selina, Scoviaor, and Deborah, are in their second year at Neema and have joined the agribusiness program.

We are grateful to @earnmovement and generous donors for supporting our farm and helping us grow a more sustainable community.
