With less than $2/day, many Neema students' families suffer from food insecurity. Permaculture farming offers a powerful approach against that. By using healthy soil practices, it leads to increased yields. It also encourages efficient use of space, allowing families to cultivate a wider variety of nutritious crops on a smaller area. This project will provide 50 families with permaculture trainings together with tools and seedlings to start small-scale farming and eradicate food insecurity.
Lack of well-paying jobs and limited access to secondary education, especially for girls, contribute to extreme poverty and food insecurity in rural Kenya. Reliance on maize monoculture increases vulnerability to weather changes, soil erosion, and nutrient depletion. Economic crises and volatile food and fuel prices disrupt agricultural supply chains and markets, jeopardizing food security. Building resilience requires moving beyond traditional practices to integrated approach like permaculture.
Permaculture farming offers families a powerful approach for bountiful harvests. By mimicking natural ecosystems, it fosters biodiversity. This, along with healthy soil practices, leads to increased yields of more nutritious food. It also encourages efficient use of space, allowing families to cultivate a wider variety of crops on a smaller area. By incorporating income-generating elements cultivating specialty crops, permaculture can even become a source of sustainable income for families.
Once empowered with permaculture education, families will be able to start small-scale businesses, contributing to household income and providing for their children. Whether growing crops on their property or in cement bags, these families will increase nutrition, boost income from selling produce, and reduce spending on fruits and vegetables. This creates a lasting impact by eliminating food insecurity, sending their children to school longer, and contributing to their community.
