Invest in Muslim Women is focused on marginalized Muslim women in Lucknow, India who are uneducated, unemployed and disempowered. But our training program offers a two-fold magic bullet: both training and employment help women to become self sustaining breadwinners. Their new earnings give them dignity and warrant respect from their husbands and in laws: they can now have a vote in family decisions. Further, the new earnings enable mothers to educate their daughters – who are often bypassed, favoring education “for sons only” in the family.
Thanks to the generosity of Global Giving donors, $6,238 were raised from the Global Giving challenge in June which provides resources to train 50 talented women with basic tailoring and embroidery skills. The impact of these trainings extends well beyond the 50 trained women and benefits some 350 family members associated with the new trainees.
Overall, women’s empowerment is vital for it is the women – who will educate their daughters first and foremost – and this is a much less likely outcome if mothers are not earning an income. Money speaks. Money gives voice and a vote to women who are otherwise disenfranchised.
