Every day, we meet dozens of women who gather around Support to Life, some for hospital applications, some for registering their kids to school, some to update their IDs, and to seek solutions to many other problems, but mainly to seek their rights. We touch the lives of women who live in harassment and rape, who are exposed to domestic as well as non-domestic violence, who are married early and by force, who are not sent to school, who are viewed with prejudice and hatred due to local women believing they will steal their husbands, who are unable to work and to be free, and who suffer from the disadvantages of being refugees as well as of their gender.
Now we will hear the story of one of those women, Halime.
Halime first came to Support to Life to get support to practice her profession. When she was in Syria, she was a tailor, where she worked hard and she bought her first sewing machine on loan. Then she slowly paid her debt month by month. In the meantime, she improved herself and began to make designs. When things got a little better, she took a few female friends of hers with her and expanded her business. So much so that she managed to buy a house, although she was unable to own it. Her husband registered the title deed of the house on himself, and soon after, the war broke out. When she came to Hatay as a refugee, she did not have any materials to practice her profession. Fortunately, she heard that we were running livelihoods support projects as Support to Life. We met her when she enrolled in the sewing and embroidery class. She not only participated in the vocational training course, but she also became our instructor's assistant thanks to her past experience. Upon completion of the course, she obtained her certificate and began to provide her children's care and all her livelihood by tailoring at home with the sewing machine donated by our association.
Now, you too can support our ‘Syrian Women's Workshop for Self-Reliance’ project, where we support dozens of women like Halime, and help extend our project through social media.
