Challenge

The continuing decline in the vegetation cover of Uganda, Kanungu in particular is attributed to little farmer knowledge of Conservation, improved agricultural practices, insufficient agricultural and conservation research that takes into account the needs and resource constraints of farmers. This has resulted into high temperatures, Low agriculture productivity as exhibited in the declining level of output per acreage, yet the sector is the largest employer in Uganda.

Solution

The project will solve the problem by addressing the conservation social, economic and material needs of local communities and work with them to realize environmental benefits such as increased agricultural productivity. This will be achieved through formation of Tree Academy Groups at grassroots level under the Village Savings and Loan Association model, capacity building and involving members in resource identification such as land for agroforestry thus promoting community led conservation.

Long-Term Impact

Existence of well empowered sustainable community led groups of people championing environmental conservation and poverty alleviation through Sustainable Agriculture. Farmers are the majority stewards of environmental quality. To enhance their livelihoods and ensure the future of agriculture, we must provide farmers and industry with better tools, Better data about what works and what doesn't, better solutions for environmental degradation and better approaches for climate change mitigation.
