Executive Summary As South Africa's population ages, the demand for long-term eldercare has never been greater-yet the resources available to meet this demand continue to shrink. The Issy Geshen Lamont Home for the Aged stands as a beacon of hope for 69 frail and vulnerable elders, offering 24-hour nursing care, dementia care support and dignified living. For 65 years, we have served more than 15,000 elders with compassion and commitment.
As South Africa and the African continent - rapidly ages, the gap between elders' care needs and the resources available to meet them is widening. Approximately 73% of pensioners depend on the state pension of $135 p/month as their primary or only income- it's insufficient to cover food, medication and shelter. A large proportion of pensioners struggle with basic activities of daily living: dementia and cognitive decline are emerging as major public health challenges with an ageing population.
The Issy Geshen Home has responded by providing dedicated service to elders living with dementia. Beyond dementia care, we provide holistic support: 24-hour professional nursing care and medication Professional occupational and physiotherapy 3 Nutritious meals daily Safe and secure accommodation for 69 elders Psycho-social support and counselling - both beneficiaries and their families Provide incontinent care Including a General Practitioner
Expected Health Impact for 69 pensioners: Improved physical health and prevention of complications (bedsores, infections) for those that are bedbound. Better cognitive engagement and reduction in dementia-related deterioration. Including: reduced agitation, depression and confusion, improved dignity, safety, improved emotional well-being and overall health.
