Summary

EcoLogic aims to support rural Guatemalan farmers with the adoption of an innovative agroforestry technique that benefits both their families and the environment. The project takes place in 11 communities located in the easternmost portion of the Sarstun River Watershed. The region is rich in biodiversity and truly unique; it is known for its manatees, tapirs, and shorebirds as well as extensive mangroves.

Challenge

Approximately three-fourths of the people living in this area are rural, agriculturally-dependent Q'eqchi' Mayans. Corn is the principal crop, cultivated primarily for subsistence. Families in the area depend completely on their surrounding natural resources to meet their basic needs. Yet, the socioeconomic limitations in these communities, along with the imperative to provide for their families in the short term have left farmers with little choice but to exploit the land unsustainably.

Solution

EcoLogic is partnering with a core group of local farmers, organized and led by the Mayan Association for Sustainable Rural Development of Sarstun (APROSARSTUN), are dedicated to adopting more sustainable agricultural practices. EcoLogic and partners will develop and implement a strategy that helps nature and people simultaneously. The project is our response to local demand for sustainable agriculture as a means to revive natural resources and improve the living conditions of farmers.

Long-Term Impact

EcoLogic aims to reduce pressure on forests and water sources by providing communities the tools they need to sustainably manage their natural resources. The goal of the project for 2012 is to establish 35 acres of agroforestry parcels to be managed by 100 farmers from 11 participating communities. We will accomplish this goal in partnership with APROSARSTUN.
