Winter Update!

By Kara Beckman | Campaign Coordinator and Global Giving Manager

Happy New Year, Global Giving Friends!

We hope that you had a wonderful and safe holiday season, and that the start of the New Year has been happy and healthy. We may be snowed in up here in Ithaca, but Globemed at Cornell is taking the opportunity to gear up for another great semester!

Since our last report, Globemed has worked, in collaboration with Cornell’s chapter of AguaClara, to have a showing of the documentary Flow: For the Love of Water, a fascinating and enlightening story about the privatization of global water sources, and how it has negatively impacted millions of people. If you haven’t seen this story, we highly recommend you watch it –750 million people lack access to clean water, so solving these issues are essential to improving human health.

Our holiday Global Giving campaign, the proceeds of which are going towards our efforts to provide the people of San Marcos with water filters, was very successful – we raised over a thousand dollars! Thank you so much to all of you who have donated!!

This spring, Globemed at Cornell has three great fundraisers planned. In addition to our annual Strip for Solidarity 5K run, we are planning two new events in collaboration with other student organizations on campus – a benefit dinner and a variety show featuring student performers. The benefit dinner, which we are hosting in collaboration with Cornell Health International, will be held on February 28th and will feature two great speakers from Weill Cornell Medical College. Keep an eye out for photos from this event soon! The variety show, our other new event this semester, is hosted in collaboration with Samahope, and will show off the talents of some of Cornell’s student performance groups! We’ll be sending out more information about these events and the Strip for Solidarity run later in the semester. We are so excited about these new events, and the chance to work with other non-profits on campus.

This year’s GROW interns have been selected, and we are so excited to have Lexie, Olivia, Diana, and Jessica traveling down to Guatemala for our second summer working with AMMID! For more information about our fabulous interns and their preparations for this summer, visit https://globemedatcornellgrow.wordpress.com/

Once again, we want to thank all of you for your continued support – none of what we do would be possible without your help, and we are so happy to have you join us in our goal of achieving global health and social justice. Wishing a happy, healthy, and fulfilling 2015!
