Fall Update and Happy Holidays!

By Kara Beckman | Campaign Coordinator and Global Giving Manager

Hello Global Giving Friends, and happy fall! This semester has been full of many exciting changes and events for Globemed at Cornell and our partner, AMMID. This year we welcomed many new members to our organization, all of whom are extremely excited about Globemed and our mission. While we miss last year’s seniors very much, this year’s Globemed at Cornell is ready to accomplish great things under our new co-presidents, Olivia and Ryan.

This summer, four of our members traveled to visit our new partner, AMMID - Asociacion Maya-Mam de Investigacion y Desarollo, in Comitancillo, San Marcos, Guatemala. This maiden voyage saw our GROW team start to install water filters in the local community, a project that we started funding for this spring. During their month-long stay in Comitancillo, the GROW team helped install eighty-five filters in four communities. If you missed out on their adventures this summer, you can catch up on their blog at https://globemedatcornellgrow.wordpress.com/.

In collaboration with AMMID’s coordinator, Ruben Feliciano, Globemed at Cornell has committed to raising funds for 180 more water filters this year. Our goal is to expand installation of the filters to five more communities in San Marcos, reaching a total of nine communities. Next summer, the GROW team will spend about four weeks in Comitancillo to help install the new filters and assess the effectiveness of the existing filters through surveys. Our goal is to raise $8,250 USD this year in support of this project – any excess funds will go towards the transportation and installation of the filters.

Globemed has a lot of fantastic events planned in support of AMMID. So far this semester we have had a very successful bake sale, and are in the midst of planning our next fundraiser, an ‘alternative gift sale’ that will give students on campus the opportunity to donate to our project with AMMID in the name of someone they love as a holiday gift. Next semester, we are looking to collaborate with other global health groups on campus to sponsor two new events, – a benefit dinner and a talent show – in addition to our Strip for Solidarity 5K. In addition to fundraising, Globemed is looking to raise awareness of global health issues on campus, and is currently planning several advocacy events, including a documentary screening and collaboration with other organizations on campus for World AIDS Weeks in December. Keep an eye out after the holidays for more information about our various fundraising and advocacy efforts!

As always, none of what we do would be possible without the help of our wonderful supporters, and your continuing efforts to help us achieve our goals. As the holidays approach, we hope you’ll consider giving the gift of clean water and improved health for those in need in San Marcos. Wishing you all and your families a happy and healthy winter, and thank you so much for your continued support!

Lots of Globemed Love!
