Working Towards Health Equity

GlobeMed at CU-Boulder has had a very active 2018 thus far. Since our last report update in January our team has been focused on small events to fundraise as well as bring more awareness to our nonprofit partner, Himalayan Health Care's work. Spring is definitely an exciting time for our team as we prepare to send a new group of GROW interns to Nepal this upcoming May. They will be participating in HHC's community work, with an emphasis on streamlining how we collect data and feedback about our efforts, specifically with our School and Latrine Construction project.

Thanks to the generous support of donors and our fundraising events we have now accumulated approximately $8000 to send to HHC. As we mentioned in our last report, we hope to continue to provide support to further the goals of both HHC and the local community.

In recent events, one of GlobeMed's local chapters at University of Denver hosted the Colorado Global Health Conference, with the theme of "Access to Health in Marginalized Communities". When our GlobeMed chapter meets, we often challenge ourselves to learn and reflect on our perspectives through educational components. In regards to the theme of the CGHC conference, one of our GROW interns from this past summer taught us a little bit about what marginalization in Nepal looks like, especially with the communities HHC works with. We would like to share that information with you.

Pictured above is the Kami, or blacksmiths, of the villages we work in. In terms of social caste, they are lower in rank than the main villagers (who are Tamang and Gurung) and are therefore forced into physical isolation from everybody else. This group experiences higher rates of school dropout, younger mothers, and poorer quality of education and health. In GlobeMed, we support HHC projects to grant scholarships and stipends to students of this community and encourage village leadership and integration. As time passes, HHC have seen students they've supported go on to become health professionals, teachers, and principals in the villages. Both GlobeMed and HHC care deeply about learning and supporting communities who are traditionally marginalized, oppressed, and ignored. We prioritize raising up voices that have been silenced and giving back power to those who have been forgotten by society.

In pursuing these missions, we extend immense thanks to those who have helped and donated to GlobeMed at CU-Boulder. We are always grateful and awed by the contributions from people in our community. We hope you understand how greatly we value the support GlobeMed and HHC have received. We anticipate sharing more exciting news with you in the future about our projects in Nepal.
