The programs & services provided by Kids in Need of Direction provide opportunities for advancement to children from the most disadvantaged areas of Trinidad & Tobago. This project will allow 30 at-risk children to participate for one year in our educational programs. Our programs address the physical, mental and emotional needs of children, and include literacy & remedial education, martial arts, exploratory learning and social education. We provide children with all essential materials need
In 2017, over 2000 children in Trinidad & Tobago scored 30% or below in secondary school entrance exams. This is due to a failure of the education system to address the dynamic impacts of poverty and out-of-school factors on academic performance. Many children are 'left behind' due to factors such as harsh socioeconomic circumstances, undiagnosed learning disabilities, and teaching which does not suit their learning styles. This problem is worse for children from 'at-risk' areas.
Our work addresses the problem by being accessible to 'at-risk' communities, by assessing each child on an individual basis, and by implementing programs that seek to address the many causes of academic underperformance. By supporting families through material assistance and counselling, as well providing consistent and targeted educational programs to children who need them, we are addressing the root causes and effecting sustainable improvements in children's lives.
The program will provide holistic education to 30 children who are otherwise unlikely to receive it, steering them away from risky circumstances and facilitating a much easier path to future prosperity. This will help to break cycles of poverty and uplift their communities.
