Improving the Environment and Reducing Expenses

By Frankline | Partner in Africa

As I was thinking about the stories and updates to share, I became very excited about writing on our sustainable food project for the children,
especially because of the biogas slurry by-product that is now supporting our gardens with rich organic manure.  While the biogas system has already helped us by providing clean cooking gas and reducing the cost of firewood, one of the greatest blessings from this project has been the slurry that comes out after gas production. To many people it may simply look like waste, but to us it represents food, sustainability, health, and hope for the children.

The slurry is now being used as organic fertilizer in our gardens and farms, helping us grow vegetables and crops naturally without relying on
expensive chemical fertilizers. This is a very important step for us toward smart and sustainable food production for the children at our
children's home.  What excites me most is seeing how everything works together in a beautiful cycle where nothing goes to waste. Cow dung, kitchen leftovers, chicken droppings, and biodegradable waste are now producing clean energy for cooking while also creating natural manure that helps us grow healthy food for the children.

This project is not only improving our environment and reducing expenses, but it is also helping us move toward a healthier and more
sustainable future for the children we care for every day.  When I see the slurry flowing from the biogas system, I honestly see more than manure — I see greener gardens, healthier meals, and long-term sustainability for our orphanage family.  We are truly grateful for the American Foundation for Children with AIDS who has supported this vision and helped make it possible.

The team here at the American Foundation for Children with AIDS thanks you for supporting this project and the work we do for the children in Africa.  If you would like to learn even more about what we do or how you can meet some of the children you have helped, please contact Tanya Weaver at tweaver@AFCAids.org.
