Limye Lavi has worked for 30 years to end child slavery in Haiti, strengthening rural communities and their ability to nurture and protect their children. Our project has four elements: 1. Educating parents about the realities of child slavery. 2. Supporting schooling for children recently removed from child servitude. 3. Providing sustainable ways for communities to generate income. 4. Mobilizing partner communities to identify common challenges and collaborate toward shared solutions.
Haiti's economic, political, and security challenges this past year have been severe. In the midst of these, our work continues. Thousands of children live in inhumane, slave-like conditions in Haiti. The average Haitian family lives in extreme poverty, and many make difficult choices to send their children to live elsewhere for survival. Unfortunately, in most cases, these children are unable to attend school and often mistreated. In Haiti, this system of child servitude is called restavek.
Our programs address the restavek system by working with rural communities to prevent children from being sent away. We do this through education, advocacy, economic development, and ecological restoration.
Since our founding, we have given hundreds of children-and their families-a second chance at a life together, while also ensuring many others are never sent into servitude. Your donations will help us continue strengthening rural communities and their capacity to protect and nurture the next generation.
