We have developed a program 'steps out of poverty' - in use for more than 5 years. The goal is to teach villagers proven methods to take certain steps. Following as many steps as possible contributes to prevent hunger and malnutrition - this being a success in the "Tiko program", now since economy is down plus high inflation, Tiko has to retrench crew members. These people however shall not go without Tiko making sure they have the knowledge of the "Tiko program" as a method of survival.
There has always been hunger in Zambia, but due to the economic developments of the last years (C19, climate change etc.) it has become a national emergency. The economic situation has also affected Tiko. Thus, it became necessary to retrench crew members. But Tiko does not want to let them go back into complete poverty, including hunger and malnutrition.
A change of mind-set could be seen as a result of the 'Tiko program' (57993) in the villages. People actually accepted the importance of vegetable, compared with their total dependency on maize. The old believes and values have changed in the villages. Those members of Tiko, who have to be retrenched shall be helped, if they change their mindset accordingly and copy what the villagers have been doing. Meaning: growing vegetables efficiently, have some meat, a cheap way of cooking and much more.
This will be the first of a series that will bring true change to traditional people. All activities will be reported and extended to many more farmers. The effects of climate change will be mitigated for people in Katete District, Eastern Province, Zambia and malnutrition will be reduced. The awareness for the working methods, in form of the 'steps out of poverty' will be raised by using Tiko as a hub and a model for agriculture under the influence of climate change and economic crisis.
