The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's ocean, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network. Our vision is to keep our beaches open to everyone, promote smart coastal development that avoids coastal impacts, protect special coastal places before they are threatened, ensure the water is clean to surf and swim and the beaches are free of plastic litter. Our ocean faces growing challenges from pollution, offshore development and climate change. At the same time, expanding industries, such as offshore oil drilling, threaten to crowd our ocean and degrade its health (and those who call it home!). Every day poses new threats to our oceans and beaches. Our ocean and special places must be proactively protected before they are threatened and stem the tide before further damage is done to the ocean's health.
Surfrider is working to protect the coasts through various key initiatives and programs; Clean Water, Beach Access, Ocean Protection, Coastal Preservation, Plastic Pollution, Blue Water Task Force, & Ocean Friendly Gardens, along with campaign and policy work. Surfrider has a large and growing network of passionate volunteers, each acting as a voice for our oceans. Our chapters and activists are supported at the national level by legal, policy and science experts.
With 56% of our coasts currently protected, Surfrider's vision is to protect 100% of the U.S. coastlines over the next five years. This network of protection will help prevent pollution along our coasts, keep beach access open, fight for appropriate coastal planning, and much more.
